LSCB Safeguarding Week (26 – 30 November 2018): Safeguarding Adolescents

The focus of this year’s East Sussex LSCB Safeguarding Week is ‘Safeguarding Adolescents’. The week is being kicked off with the Pan Sussex LSCB Conference to explore the practice of safeguarding vulnerable adolescents – what can we learn from developments nationally, how does this fit with our local understanding and practice, and how can we strengthen our local response to safeguarding vulnerable adolescents.

Whilst the findings of the Independent Inquiries into child sexual exploitation and the emerging threat of wider criminal exploitation have been a catalyst in our approach to how we work with adolescents, they continue to remain an often overlooked group in our safeguarding responses or an underrepresented group to work with.

This week is about helping practitioners explore the risks and issues around safeguarding adolescents and starting conversations in teams about how you balance safeguarding responsibilities with complex issues of consent, capacity and self-determination.

Topics for discussion have been informed by local learning arising from serious case reviews and national research on safeguarding adolescents. Subjects include Contextual Safeguarding, Adolescent Neglect, Suicide Prevention, transition to adult services for children at risk of exploitation, County Lines and community approaches to safeguarding adolescents. We’ll be sharing resources on these themes via our twitter account, disseminating conference resources, and through the LSCB’s Safeguarding Adolescent Learning Briefing.

Please do get in touch at LSCB.Contact@eastsussex.gov.uk or via twitter on @EastSussexLSCB if you have resources to share or want to contribute to the debate
